UNFPA in Bhutan

United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

UNFPA expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives.

UNFPA’s partnership with the Royal Government of Bhutan started in the 1970s with the first country program cycle in 1987.

Bhutan adopted the Delivering as One approach in 2008, which aims to increase the effectiveness and impact of the United Nations through more coherent programmes. This common country programme follows this approach to highlight cross-cutting issues, strengthen synergies, reinforce complementarities and remove duplications, thereby enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in achieving focused results.

The current 6th country programme is built on the One United Nations Programme (One Programme) for 2014-2018, which encompasses the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) and the UNDAF Action Plan. The common country programme document reflects strategic priorities and key results of the One Programme, with complementary UNFPA-specific results and resources frameworks. It aims to promote United Nations coherence and enhance joint programming in support of national development objectives. UNFPA collaborates with government, non-government organization, youth groups and United Nations organizations through technical support, knowledge management and policy advocacy for:

  • delivery and utilization of quality reproductive health services, (maternal health, adolescent sexual reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, gender-based-violence, commodity procurement and supply, health information management). Implementation of life-skills-education including sexuality education.

  • implementation of domestic violence prevention act and its implementation rules and regulations, monitoring and reporting on concluding observations of international conventions, developing diversified partnership framework and information management system on gender-based-violence.

  • Institutionalizing data management, knowledge generation and sharing on population and development.
